TCA-YWAM Austin  DISCIPLESHIP TRAINING COURSE July 23, 2017 Topic: PRAYING with Jesus (Compiled by Jon Dorris) (Permission granted for anyone to use freely) Intro 1. The Why of prayer 2. The How of prayer 3. The Lord’s Prayer Conclusion – Final encouragements 1. The Why of Prayer – The Mystery of Prayer A. Deepening intimacy with God (each Member of Trinity) – (READ) John 17:3 -Luke 5:16-17, 16 But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness  and pray. 17 One day He was teaching; and there were some Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was present for Him to perform healing. -Deepening TRUST and FAITH in God and His Faithfulness.  -Proverbs 3:4-5, Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight. -Hebrews 11:6, And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he  who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him. -Luke 18:7-8, “now, will not God bring about justice for His elect who  cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long over them? 8 I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?” EX. My lack of trust on Lookout Mountain -1. I did not stop and take time to ask & listen for God’s for His guidance -2. I figured I was close to my car but failed to persevere in trusting Him and called  Brad only to find out I was just ¼ mile from my destination.   EX. Then the victory – I asked God about climbing Mt. Le Conte (11-mile round trip). He  said I was free to choose but that I would love it and He would be there to help me up and down the mountain. So I did, and it was stunning (Show picture of the summit).  B. A deepening maturing as 1st born Sons of God  -John 5:19, 30, 19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to  them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. 20 For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing;…” 30 “I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. EX. Last week I came to God and said, “I fell short of your love again. What do you want me to do about it?” He said, “Just keep coming to me and give it into My hands?” I asked, “can you share more detail about how this works?” He said, “Coming to me is humbling yourself before Me and I pour out more grace on you, which transforms you and empowers you to live more like Jesus.” -Faith, Hope, & Love (main things) -John 14:21, 23 (We need God’s Presence or no power.) 21 He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him.” 23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him. -Key to answered prayer. (Abiding in God’s selfless love) -John 14:12-15 (:15 “If you love Me you will keep My  commandments” – Now in NT it means walk in the Spirit which always lives out selfless love – your spirit and the Holy Spirit are One.) -John 15:7-10 -If you are in Christ then “positionally” you are there in your  spirit, but mature into it with your soul-man actions.   C. Participating with Jesus’ vision-mission -Matthew 4:17, “From that time Jesus began to preach and say, ‘Repent  for the kingdom of heaven is at hand’ ”.  -Acts 3:19-21 (READ IT) Restoration of all things under His Kingdom  EX.- Mt. Le Conte, the family and I shared with each other what God was doing (restoring) in our lives.  -Ro. 14:17 Righteous Generosity, Peace, and Joy in Holy Spirit.  -Luke 4:18-19, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed, 19 To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.” -Ministering with Him by doing the same things He did: -Matthew 9:35-38 – 10:1, 35 Jesus was going through all the cities and  villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness. 36 Seeing the people, He felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dispirited like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.38 Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.” Jesus summoned His twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every kind of disease and every kind of sickness. -Leading to Rev. 5:9-10,  And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. 10 “You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth.” 2. The main principles of How we should Pray. -LISTENING Prayer is what Jesus did, and so should we.  -Let’s review the main Hearing God Principles EX. I used these to pray IF I should do the 11-mile round trip climb of Mt. Le Conte. -The climb worked out wonderfully.   1. Praise and thank God for privilege of participating with Him in prayer. 2. Ask Holy Spirit to search our heart and convict us of anything hindering  our intimacy with Him.  3. Acknowledge our need for the Holy Spirit’s direction and power to pray.  Ask Him to totally flow in and through you in prayer. 4. Deal aggressively with the enemy (demons, etc.). Come against the enemy  in the all-powerful Name of Jesus Christ and the Sword of the Spirit (scriptures the Holy Spirit impresses on you to decree).  5. Die to your own imaginations and desires of what you feel you should pray  and ask the Holy Spirit to live Jesus through you (Gal. 2:20).  6. Praise God in faith for the wonderful prayer time you are about to have.  -MUST WALK IN FAITH - Mark 11:22-24, 22 And Jesus answered saying to them, “Have  faith in God. 23 Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted him. 24 Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you. 25 Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you your transgressions. 26 [But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father who is in heaven forgive your transgressions.”] -Our faith must have WORKS to be successful faith.  James 2:17-20, 17 Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself. 18 But someone may well say, “You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” 19 You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder. 20 But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless? -HEART BELIEF & DECREE (Job 22:28) We receive manifestation of prayers by same  process we received Jesus as Savior and Lord.  -Romans 10:9-10, 9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in  your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. 3. The Lord’s Prayer -Matthew 6:5-15 (Read it) -(Demonstrate as you teach this) 1. Our Father, who is heaven, hallowed be your name.  D-Hallowed - Means to honor as holy.  -John 4:23-24 “…true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth,  for such people the Father seeks to be His worshippers. God is spirit and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” -So what does this look like? a). We should have regular times of thanking God and praising Him for: -Who He is -What He has done and is doing ( and will be doing in the future). -We can use his many names  b). By the Holy Spirit’s help we focus on the truths of who we are  “positionally” in Christ.  c). Ask the Holy Spirit to help lead you into creative ways to express all  of the above.  d). Remember “worship” is everything we do (either to God or the  demonic realm).  -So ask the Holy Spirit to help you live out life in the spirit  (loving acts) and not the flesh (selfish acts)  2. Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  -Ask the Holy Spirit what aspect of the Kingdom coming He wants you to  focus on today with Him. -EX- It could focus on your family, workplace, or your school settings.  -Or it could be focused on a broader topic, like our city, state,  nation(s).   -Since final goal is Rev. 11:15 “…The kingdom of the world has become the  kingdom of our Lord, and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever.” -We work with the Holy Spirit to do: Ps. 110:1-3 (Read it).  a). Goal – put Jesus’ enemies under His feet. b). Holy Spirit does this through us. c). When God’s people see His power they start volunteering for this -Therefore we must grow and mature in Christ so more and more  powerful acts are flowing from us.  EX. Fire-Starters - Recently a missionary in Scotland said that there is a current powerful move of God happening. She said in last 9 days 3000 people in the UK came to the Lord and 2000 in Wales also came to the Lord.  EX. In last 200 years most of the powerful moves of God have come from college students who gathered TO PRAY.  (CRM has book on THE NOON TIME PRAYER) -This helps our faith step out and volunteer to live out truths like Luke 4:18-19.  Demonstrate declaring kingdom truths over our family.  EX-I was holding our new grandson often and decreeing kingdom truths and praying  prayers over Him.  3. Give us this day our daily bread.  -Ask the Holy Spirit where he wants you focusing in regards to the topic of  provision/needs.  -You can then claim Jesus’ Blood covenant promises.  -Or you can pray petitions.  -Philippians 4:6, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything  by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God”.   -Remember you are a Son of God, not a beggar.  -So pray faith-filled prayers, not doubt and unbelief.  Demonstrate: EX- “Father I thank you that Jesus died on the cross to buy for me any provision I need to carry  out your will, so I am asking you now to manifest on earth as it is in heaven my need for__________________. And I thank you for your faithfulness”.  4. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.  -Once again ask the Holy Spirit to show you if you need to forgive anyone.  -And ask Him if there is anything you need to confess/repent of.  Demonstrate: EX. Father, by your grace, I forgive my boss who was harsh to me. Father also please forgive my wrong response in judging my boss in my heart.” 5. Lead us away from temptation and deliver us from evil.  -Ask the Holy Spirit where you need to focus here.  -It may be you asking for His power to not fall into a temptation that you have  been struggling with.  -Let Holy Spirit reveal one or more promises of Jesus you can faith  claim and decree over your tempting situations  -Job 22:28, “You shall decree a thing, and it will be  established for you, and light will shine on your ways.”  -Isaiah 55:11, “So shall My word be which goes forth from My  mouth; It shall not return to me empty without accomplishing what I desire, and without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.”   -It may be something you need to be delivered from.  -Remember the word “Sozo” – the Greek word for SAVED.  -It means healed, delivered , made whole, etc. (Anything you  need, Jesus paid for at the Cross).  -Romans 10:13, “Whoever will call upon the name of the Lord  will be saved.” EX. When my kids were little I was trying to teach them this SOZO concept. So I told them when I tickled them I would not stop until they called on the name of Jesus to be saved (from me tickling them). They would scream: JESUS! Today they remember this concept of SOZO.  6. For Yours is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever, Amen.  -Just as you began the prayer time with thanking and praising God, now end  with the same.  -Get creative in honoring Him  -Again Ask the Holy Spirit for His suggestions -Also you can use this as a powerful time of faith-filled declarations of God’s  truths/promises.  EX. “Father I thank you for TCA, and how you are moving here. Lord I praise you for all that our church has accomplished in your Kingdom. Jesus I thank you for your faithfulness that I am counting on to SOZO my family and friends and bring them into your kingdom.  -Amen means “Let it be so” -You can use these truths in the conclusion below to praise and thank God for also.  Conclusion – “The Spirit and the Bride say COME (quickly Lord Jesus) A. Rev. 22:7, “I am coming quickly, Blessed is he who heeds the words of the  prophecy of this book.” -Rev. 22:12, “Behold I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to  render to every man what he has done.” -Rev. 22:17, “The Spirit and the Bride say come…” -We the Bride work with the Holy Spirit in prayer to bring about  Jesus’ 2nd coming.  -Rev. 22:20 – We see Jesus and us working together in prayer in this verse 1. Jesus reveals His intension: “Yes I am coming quickly” 2. We respond in prayer: “Amen (let it be so). Come Lord Jesus.” -Rev. 22:21 Grace is with us to do all this – “The grace of the Lord Jesus be  with all the saints. Amen.” STOP HERE IF OUT OF TIME LET’S RECAP: 1. So the mystery of prayer is developing deep relationship with God. (John 17:3) 2. We develop into mature first born sons with Jesus -Eph. 4:13, “…until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the  knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature, which belongs to the fullness of Christ.” 3. Let’s remember Jesus’ model and his encouragement to align with Him.  -John 5:19, “Truly, truly I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself,  unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son does in like manner.” -John 5:30, “ I can do nothing on My own initiative, As I hear, I judge; and  My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.” 4. What path will we take? What will the results be? Listen to: -Matthew 7:21-27 21 21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’ The Two Foundations 24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. 26 Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.” Invitation: If you want to take Jesus’ hand and ask him to help you walk all this out, please stand and agree with my prayer in your heart.  If you need prayer for anything I will be here at the front.
