Teaching Outline:
Missing the point
1 Corinthians 13:1-2
1If I speak in the tongues of men or of
angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.
2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge,
and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am
nothing.
ARE WE MISSING THE
POINT?
Do you live by an agenda? For many of us our
agendas have become the driving force in our life. In the book of John Jesus
makes it clear that there is one thing that should set us apart from an
world. God’s agenda is really simple: And we have simply made a mess of it.
WE ARE REALLY GIFTED AT
MISSING THE POINT
John
13:6-8
6He came to
Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”7Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but
later you will understand.”8“No,” said Peter,
“you shall never wash my feet.”
Peter is making some great theological points to the
master: He has a great agenda for the Lord
John
13:34-35 NI ME Version
John
13:33-35 NIV
34“A
new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love
one another. 35By this everyone will know that you are
my disciples, if you love one another.”
Jackie Pullinger Chasing the dragon
“Before the great commission Jesus gives his disciple
a new commandment”
The first disciples of Jesus were known by
the pagan world for one distinguishing mark: The love care and concern they had
for one another.

Vide, inquiunt, ut se diligunt; et pro alterutro
mori parati sunt.
Emperor Julian, Roman emperor 361
Sheperd of Hermes AD 100
Two distinct ways we grieve the Holy Spirit
today.
1. Failing to fellowship with the Holy Spirit
first and foremost
This directly affects our intimacy with one
another
2. Failing the new commandment to love one
another sacrificially
