Topic: Are YOU like King David?
(Compiled by Jon Dorris) (Permission granted for
anyone to use freely)
Main Point: King David made all kinds of mistakes/sins and yet God
called him “A man after My own heart, who will do ALL my will”.
-Q – What is that
all about? LET’s find out.
Your assignment and
discussion Q
1. Do you think you
could become a man/woman after God’s
own
heart (hungry to be a Friend of God)?
2. What hinders you
from this?
3. What will you do
about this?
A. David spent much
time with God
-As Teen age shepherd
-Worshipped God
-Wrote many worship songs
-Saw stars and creation and
honored God
-He grew in Friendship with God
-Talked to God about everything
(Book of Psalms)
-He learned to trust God in
everything
-2 Cor. 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that
always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for
every good deed;
-Phil. 4:13 I can do all things through Him
who strengthens
me.

B. God revealed His
“Destiny Goal” to David. To one day be
King
of Israel
-As Teen-ager
Prophet Samuel anoints David King
prophetically.
1 Samuel 13:13-14 Samuel said to Saul, “You have acted foolishly; you have
not kept the commandment of the Lord your
God, which He commanded you, for now the Lord would
have established your kingdom over Israel forever. 14 But now
your kingdom shall not endure. The Lord has
sought out for Himself a man after His own heart, and the Lord has appointed him as ruler
over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”
-Listen again Acts 13:22 After He had removed him (King Saul), He
raised up David to be their king, concerning whom He also testified and said,
‘I have found David the
son of Jesse, a man after My heart,
who will do all My will.’
-David sinned too, so what is the deal???
-I believe 2 main things:
1. David devoted
his life to growing as a Friend of God.
-Saul
devoted his life to HIS selfish desires.
2. David BELIEVED
God and lived out FAITH towards God’s
destiny promise for him to
be King of Israel.
-During the 20 years of
standing in faith he CONDUCTED HIS ACTIONS IN LINE WITH HIS FAITH.
-Saul kept doing what he
felt was right in his own eyes, not the directives of God.
C. David grows in GODLY CHARACTER 20 years by trials he
faced.
-He grew in his TRUST in God (FAITH)
-Killed Goliath
-Stayed respectful to King Saul while he waited
for God to
promote him.
D. David, as King of Israel, sought to stay devoted to God
and
His Kingdom ways.
-Brought back the Ark of the Covenant (God’s
Presence)
-He established 24/7 worship to God
E. He was humble and repentant when he sinned.
-He sinned often
-Worst was
adultery with Bathsheba
-And the
murderous cover up
-But listen to
his repentant heart cry in Psalm 51:1-13, 17
F. He deeply loved his people as King, and they loyally
followed him
-He sacrificed
his selfish ways often in order to be a
blessing to his people.
-He loved King
Saul’s son, Jonathan as a brother.
G. David reigned as a devoted Godly King.
-Hi lived Micah
6:8 He has told you, O man, what is good;
And what does the Lord require of you
But to do justice,
to love kindness,
And to walk humbly with your God?
-God honored him
for it
-God blessed him
to be the greatest King besides Jesus.
-Jesus came from
his bloodline.
Conclusion:
-How should we live?
Matthew 6:33 But seek
first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will
be added to you.
Invitation:
-If you want to follow in King David’s footsteps and make
Jesus first in your life to fulfill His destiny for you, then please stand, and
I will pray for us.
